This is, Like, Really Important
Happy Monday, sisters!
This week, we’re covering a topic that’s, like, intended just as much as a reminder to me as it is for, y’all. This is something that, like, everyone struggles with these days, and can be, like, making you seem way less put together than I know you are. Do you see where I’m, like, going with this?
YOU’RE SAYING LIKE TOO MUCH.
And you sound so much more professional when you don’t. You sound confident in what you’re saying, and bosses love that. They hired you to know what you’re talking about, so don’t give them a reason to doubt your expertise.
I know, it’s so hard to stop. But, it’s just a habit, and habits can be broken. The first step is admitting you have a problem, and once you’re aware of the problem, you’ll notice how much you say it. A good way to become more aware of it is to listen to how much other people are saying it. I’m not suggesting you judge others (maybe a little is fine, if you keep it to yourself), but it becomes SUPER annoying to listen to someone talk when they can’t get a sentence out without it. Like, just spit it out already!
You might immediately replace it with something else - maybe “um.” But that’s ok, it just takes practice. Also, thinking about what you want to say before you start talking helps. My problem is that I start a really great thought, but I don’t necessarily know where it’s going. It’s also totally alright to just take a short pause; you don’t have to fill the silence with “like” or “um.”
Think of a really great inspirational speaker, or someone at your company that’s an amazing presenter - they definitely aren’t saying “like” every other word. They know what they want to say, and they say it. They’re prepared!
This is definitely not an overnight fix - so give yourself some grace. Start with cutting it out for just one meeting!
Alright sisters, I’ll see you next week! Remember, you can either kick this week’s ass, or let it kick yours.
