Start Your Day Sunny-Side Up

This isn't unsolicited advice

Happy Monday!

What did you eat for breakfast? My breakfast has traditionally been just a smoothie (with protein powder), but I’ve had a revelation lately. Maybe y’all already knew this, in which case you can ignore me on this one. But I just have to share it! They say that breakfast is the most important meal of the day, and THEY’RE RIGHT! When I add a couple eggs, a piece of toast, some yogurt and granola, or any other combination of healthy proteins, carbs, fiber, etc., wonderful things happen:

My brain actually works. I can (shockingly) formulate a coherent thought throughout the day. I feel so much more focused and alert. I don’t have to work my brain so hard to think about whatever task I’m doing. I’m more productive, and feel like I’m contributing more, which makes me feel good about myself.

It sets me up for a more well rounded day of eating. If I’m fuller throughout the morning, and I don’t go into lunch RAVENOUS, where I then eat so much for lunch that I’m super sleepy from 1 - 2:30pm. I can eat a regular lunch, have an afternoon snack, and then make it to a reasonable time in the evening for dinner. On days that I don’t set myself up with a solid breakfast, I’m starving at 5pm. Then I snack like crazy until dinner, so I’ve probably eaten more calories in total that day than I tried to “skip” by having a light breakfast.

I’m less anxious in the morning. The first thing I do in the morning is sprint to the coffee pot, and I can tell I feel more stressy on the mornings where I’ve had more caffeine than real food. Whole proteins and carbohydrates are key here.

Everyone’s body and blood sugars are different, so definitely play around with meals and find what works best for you. I’m BY NO MEANS a dietician or nutritionist, so these tips are just my lived-experiences. Test it out for yourself - have a breakfast this week with a protein, carb, and a fruit, and tell me your day doesn’t rock.

BREAKFAST IS ACTUALLY THE MOST IMPORTANT MEAL OF THE DAY.

I’ll see you next week! Remember, you can either kick this week’s ass, or let it kick yours.
