Do You Know Everything?

You solicited this advice

Happy Monday, Corporate Sisters!

This week, I want to talk about being coachable. It’s easy to convince yourself you’re not allowed to admit there’s something you don’t know. Or there’s something you aren’t perfect at. But in reality, the best teams are full of people willing to learn from each other.

I totally understand (and also struggle with) the idea of revealing to my boss or teammates that I’m not a master of all skills. It can be scary! What if they think I’m not right for this job?? What if they get mad at me for not knowing how to do this??

But, bosses love coachable employees. Who would you rather manage - someone who listens and adapts when you give them advice on something to change? Or someone who pretends to listen, but won’t actually change anything because they believe they already know everything.

I HAVE BAD NEWS: YOU’LL NEVER KNOW EVERYTHING.

Instead of pretending that you’re all-knowing, let others pass along their expertise! Ask for help when you’re struggling with something, and you might learn a new technique or skill that helps you grow.

Projects get done faster when you have a team of people willing to ask for help and lean into each other for different talents.

Asking for help doesn’t make you look weak.

It makes you look invested in your job. It makes you look like you care about the quality of your work. It makes you look like you care about improving yourself.

This week, you have homework! Let someone coach you on something. Whether that means you ask for help on something, or you just actually take someone’s advice instead of pretending you don’t need it.

Until next week! Remember, you can either kick this week’s ass, or let it kick yours!
